Quick Start on How to Create a Prescription

  1. Go to Patient Profile via Client Summary Screen or clicking on patient’s name anywhere in CalMHSA Rx screen.
  2. Select Pharmacy through Pharmacy search bar/favorites list.
  3. Select correct Prescription Benefit, if any.
  4. Click ‘Create New Rx’.
  5. Click on ‘Add medication’ to search for a medication through ‘Select Medication for Prescription’ option.
  6. Always select medication from the dropdown list (avoid free text as then the prescription will not be faxed & not electronically sent to Pharmacy. So, there is no way to check for drug interactions/duplication of medications).
  7. Review and Acknowledge alerts for drug interactions, allergies etc.
  8. Fill in all details in ‘Prescribe Medication’, including if there are additional directions to patient (client) or additional notes to pharmacist.
  9. Select option for Split Orders for more than 1 pharmacies, if applicable.
  10. Remember only EPCS Prescriber can prescribe Controlled substances. You will need a Passphrase and token PIN to continue prescribing controlled substances.
  11. Use ‘Star’ icon for a medication as favorite (to make it easy for prescribing same medication in the future).
  12. Send actions for a Prescription-
    1. Send- transmits the prescription to the pharmacy electronically (actioned by Prescribers).
    2. Save Pending Rx, Save and Add Rx – For queuing up orders for prescribers (g. actioned by provider agents).
    3. Send, Signature to Follow – For Non-controlled substances prescribed by provider agents (queuing up orders for prescriber to provide signatures).
    4. Send & Print – It transmits the prescription to the pharmacy electronically and prints out a watermarked (non-legal) copy of the prescription for your records.
    5. Sign Don’t Send – signs the medication and adds the medication to the patient’s active medication list but does not send a prescription to the pharmacy. This is useful if the patient was given a sample.
    6. Print don’t’ send- For printing prescription, giving the print copies to the patient for the patient to take it to pharmacy.
  13. When you prescribe a medication that is already existing in the patient’s prescription, then a pop-up window appears that says — Prescription/Medication reconciliation- option ‘To Keep/Stop Existing Medication’ Or ‘Add New Medication’. Select, as appropriate.
  14. There is a link at the top of the screen OR can be accessed from the hamburger menu on top left corner — Prescription Summary, this helps you view all prescriptions and their status.
