How to Include an Authorization Number on a Claim 

SmartCare will automatically include the Authorization Number on either the HCFA or in the 837P claim file if the following criteria has been met: 

  • The authorization is tied to the service. This can be confirmed by looking at the Authorization tab and ensuring the Authorization shows in the Attached Authorization section. 
  • An Auth Number has been entered in the Auth Record under Client Authorizations (Client)

The 837P will populate the auth number into Loop 2300 REF*GI segment and for HCFAs the auth number would appear in box 23
